Columbus State University Theatre International Playwriting Competition

The Larry Corse Prize for Playwriting was established in 2003 by Dr. Larry Corse, Professor Emeritus of Theatre and English at Clayton State University, to encourage the development and production of new works for the stage.  The 2003 competition was won by Robert Karmon for his play Caliban and Miranda.  In 2004, the competition was moved to its new host, Columbus State University Department of Theatre, Columbus, Georgia.  The competition has attracted more than 300 entries each year from around the world.  The 2004 winning entry was the comedy Seagulls in a Cherry Tree by William Missouri Downs.  Ian Walker received the 2005 award for The Gravediggers Tango.  For a complete list of all entries from 2005, visit the Web site.

GUIDELINES:

• The number of actors needed for the play should be between five and ten.

• Plays should be submitted with a cover sheet containing the following information:
   a. Author’s name
   b. Author’s address
   c. Title of play

• Each play must also include a synopsis of the play which is a real synopsis and not a teaser or advertising copy.
• Plays previously submitted to the competition may not be resubmitted unless major revision has taken place.
• The copies of the plays submitted will not be returned.  Please do not send one-and-only originals.
Rights
Columbus State University Department of Theatre will have first production rights for the winning play.  The playwright will retain all other rights, including copyright, publication, and performance rights.  If for some reason Columbus State University Department of Theatre is not able to produce the winning play during the academic year following the announcement of the winner, first production rights revert to the playwright.  If, in the opinion of the jury, no play worthy of the prize is submitted, Columbus State University Department of Theatre reserves the right to withhold the prize.

Gerbode and Hewlett Foundations Invite Applications
for California Emerging Playwright Awards

The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation have announced a special round of $50,000 grants for the creation and production of major new contemporary plays by young California playwrights.  These new works will be commissioned and premiered by Bay Area performing arts organizations and created by California playwrights of great promise who are age 35 or younger at the time of application.

These grants are part of a three-year, $900,000 initiative by the Gerbode and Hewlett foundations to support Bay Area performing artists and arts organizations at a time when funding has been increasingly difficult to come by.  In 2005 the initiative funded six $50,000 commissions for emerging choreographers.  In 2007 the initiative will fund commissions for emerging young composers.  Details on the 2007 commissioning initiative will be announced in the spring of 2007.

The 2006 program will grant up to six awards of $50,000 to nonprofit performing arts presenting organizations or multidisciplinary presenting organizations (such as performing arts centers, festivals, community arts facilities, theater producers, and community centers) that are based in the counties of San Francisco, Alameda, Marin, Napa, Sonoma, Solano, Contra Costa, San Mateo, or Santa Clara.

The 2006 Emerging Playwright Awards Guidelines and Application are available at the Gerbode Foundation Web site.

Her Circle
INFORMATION:   Her Circle is a new e-zine dedicated to generating awareness of the feminine experience in the world community.  Our goal is to promote understanding and respect for women across cultural lines through intelligent works of writing, art, and photography by women around the globe.  We are looking for work that creates a sense of intimacy with its subject by effectively relating a story or revealing a telling moment in the lives of women.  The focus of the work should be directed toward illustrating the role of women within a particular culture, examining the challenges being female presents to achieving human and legal rights.  We receive many quality submissions that focus on themes common to women but that, however, fail to provide cultural context.  Show us the world through a woman's eyes and put us in her shoes.  Themes related to non-Western culture are highly encouraged.

(at http://www.webpower.com) is a brand-new full-featured Web magazine being funded by an established, profitable Internet company, which means we can offer competitive pay for stories.  We are looking for literary erotica of 1,500 to 5,000 words.  Intriguing, layered characters and provoking plots are a must.  Story first, sex second.  Please do not send us porn without plot, or anything nonconsensual or involving minors.  Straight, gay, lesbian, and transgendered stories are all welcome.  Think Nerve Magazine and The Best American Erotica series.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:   Submissions or inquiries and writing samples should be sent to cara@webpower.com.  Attachments may be sent as Word files.  Hardcopy submissions may be sent to the address below, but please include a disk copy along with your printed story.  Submissions will not be returned unless specifically requested and a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) is included.
